


Blek is credited with being the inventor of the life-sized stencil and the first to transform stencils from basic lettering into pictorial art.Today’s graffiti art around the world. Blek initially painted stencils of rats on the walls and described the rat as ‘the only free animal in the city’. He described the rat as 'the only free animal in the city',4 and one which 'spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art'.5 His name originates from the comic book Blek le Roc, using 'rat' as an anagram for 'art'. Blek le Rat began creating works from 1981, using the Paris streets as his canvas of choice. The book features photographs of hundreds of Blek's works and an in-depth exploration of the method and meaning behind his stencils and posters, as well as a look at the evolution of urban art from New York, Paris, Barcelona, and Buenos Aires to London, Taipei, Naples, and Berlin.
